Art Basel Qatar Reveals Highlights and Further Details for Its Inaugural 2026 Edition
Art Basel has revealed the key highlights of the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar, offering a first look at the artworks and programs that will shape the fair’s debut in Doha in February 2026. Bringing together 87 galleries from 31 countries and territories and presenting work by 84 international artists, the fair pairs its Galleries sector with an expansive Special Projects program unfolding across Msheireb Downtown Doha. The show runs from 5–7 February, with Preview Days on 3–4 February.
Anchored in the curatorial theme Becoming, Art Basel Qatar explores transformation as both a material process and a conceptual framework. Across the Galleries sector, artists engage with ideas of change, transition, and identity, examining how histories, geographies, and social conditions shape contemporary artistic practice. The fair positions itself as a vital platform connecting the artistic production of the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia with global dialogues across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
“Together with the main Galleries sector of the show, these works present a narrative of transformation that offers audiences the chance to experience the region’s widest range of artistic practices.”
A defining feature of the inaugural edition is the expansive Special Projects program, curated by Artistic Director Wael Shawky in close collaboration with Vincenzo de Bellis, Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Art Basel Fairs. Comprising nine large-scale, site-specific installations and performances, the program unfolds across public spaces and cultural venues in Msheireb Downtown Doha, forming the most extensive group of public works ever realized for an Art Basel show. Spanning sculpture, moving image, architecture, and performance, the Special Projects respond directly to the theme Becoming, addressing environmental, economic, and social shifts shaping the region and the wider world.
Taking place alongside a rich program of exhibitions and public art across Qatar Museums institutions, Art Basel Qatar 2026 establishes Doha as a key destination for contemporary art and cultural exchange, offering audiences an unparalleled opportunity to engage with artistic practices shaping the present — and imagining possible futures.
